Week 9 or Matchday 9 for the Euro 2016 Qualifiers will be on October 8 to 10 and should feature
another eventful three days of football action. Week 8 saw England, the Czech Republic, Iceland,
and Austria already qualifying for the Finals. In other groups, the Russia (Group G) and Poland
(Group D) sides added significantly to their points tallies by finishing their matches with 7-goal
leads. Considering how competitive their respective groups are (especially Group D) then these
two sides will need to win their respective matches in order to get the chance to qualify outright
for the Finals which will start in December.
Matches to Watch
October 8
For Thursday, you’re going to want to tune in to what happens with Hungary, Ireland, and
Northern Ireland’s matches. Winning against Faroe Islands will potentially move Hungary to 2
nd on Group F on the Win-Loss column (if Romania drops its match against Finland). As for Ireland, many people are writing them off since they will be facing perennial contenders in Germany. However, a win against Deutschland would instantly propel the Irish to tie potentially leapfrog over Poland for second in Group D. Going back at Group F, Northern Ireland will have the chance to clinch an outright berth to the Finals should they win against a Greece side that has been
abysmal the whole tournament (three draws and no wins).
Perhaps the most compelling of these matches would be that of Portugal against Denmark. The
Portuguese are assured of a Finals berth if they win while Denmark also has to win to protect
their current ranking in Group I. A loss for the Danes will allow an Albania side to leapfrog them
for the runner-up position. Albania still has 2 matches more to play, both of which are against
lowly Serbia and Armenia.
October 9
A win against Luxembourg on Saturday is all Spain needs to qualify for the Finals while Slovakia
needs to win against Belarus for a chance to hold on to their current runner-up ranking (and an
outright trip to the Finals). Although the Ukraine is only one game behind Slovakia in the win
column, they will need to play out of their minds and win against Macedonia (and more
importantly Spain on Matchday 10) as well as hope that the Slovaks lose at least one of their
remaining matches. With England and Austria already punching their tickets to France, Russia
and Switzerland will need to win all of their remaining matches to qualify as the runner-ups for
Group E and G (respectively).
October 10
Iceland and the Czech Republic have identical records and both sit on top of the Group A
standings. Even if both lose their matches on Saturday and on Matchday 10, they’re still
guaranteed a trip to the Finals. The same can’t be said for Wales and Belgium in Group B as well
as Group H’s Italy and Norway. Wales will have to win against Bosnia and Herzegovina while
Belgium has to put away Andorra if they don’t want Israel overtaking them in the standings. In a
similar manner to Group B’s leaders, Italy and Norway needs to respectively win against
Azerbaijan and Malta to keep Croatia at bay.
