Went to see Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers last night. Steve Winwood opened for them. I like Tom Petty well enough, but I really think Winwood is terrific.
The infamous Washington DC swampy heat and humidity season has begun with a vengeance and this was an outdoor concert at the Nissan Pavilion. They have seats in an open air covered arena, and lots of lawn seating behind it. It was so hot, you could see the sweat pouring off of people who were just sitting still in the shade. Tom Petty remarked about it being a warm southern evening. He wore long pants, a long sleeved shirt, a vest and a jacket. The jacket soon came off and the sleeves were rolled up. He still must have been suffocatingly hot.
We unfortunately couldn't stay for the whole event - husband had to prepare for a business trip for which he'll be gone all week. The highlights - Winwood's "Mr. Fantasy," Petty's "Free Falling" and "I Won't Back Down." But the absolute best part of the evening was when Winwood and Petty joined together for "Gimme Some Lovin." It absolutely brought the house down.

We saw Petty in '06 here in Berkeley. He puts on a great show.
