William F. Buckley
Not being a follower of or knowledgeable about the conservative movement until fairly recently (approximately 9/11/2001), I don't know much about Buckley. Reading all the heartfelt words on his passing at the National Review's Corner blog and Commentary's Contentions makes me wish I knew more. If you haven't yet done so, I highly recommend taking a look through some of the postings in both places.

Interesting revelation about yourself!
I would say a watershed event for me was the 1991 Gulf War, when everyone at work was going about their business, and I was terrified for my little cousins in their gas masks and for my friends who had recently made aliyah.

He came and spoke at a fundraiser for a library here in Cincinnati, and was wonderful. His son, Christopher, appeared many years later for yet another fundraiser for the same library.
Both great, both wonderful. One library in the world definitely feels a loss.

Without realizing it, I was starting to lean right before 9/11, but that awful event pushed me over the edge. It was after that when I became more political and started paying more attention. Witnessing the anti-Israel bias of the left, I became more and more turned off by their point of view, and saw how skewed and wrong it was. And the more I studied the situation and thought about it, the more I realized that I was thinking like a conservative/libertarian.
When I have time, I am going to read some of Buckley's articles and more of what people have had to say about him.
