The key to Arab-Israeli peace is not Palestinian statehood. It is to compel the Arab world to abandon its dream of liquidating Israel. As a matter of national self-respect, Olmert should repeat his demand that the Palestinians acknowledge Israel's Jewish identity - and make it nonnegotiable. If Israel cannot insist even on so fundamental a point of honor, it has already lost more than it knows. - Jeff Jacoby

It seems so obvious, and it's frightening how many people cannot grasp this simple concept. In a weird way it reminded me of the shock headlines back in the 1970s: "$50,000 study establishes that breast milk is good for babies." When societies get too sophisticated (my polite word for those who have been indoctrinated at American schools and universities), they become incapable of seeing simple solutions and insist on mucking things up with unnecessary, and often cruel, complexities.
